Hail is the classic Aurora example: a cracked rear window or sunroof seal lets water in, carpet soaks, and a musty smell follows within days. Comprehensive coverage often handles hail damage, and the resulting water and odor cleanup may be part of the same claim. Smoke from a garage or house fire, and bear spray released in a collision, can also be connected to a covered event.

Ordinary wear, smoking, spilled food and slow leaks from worn seals are generally not covered. The insurer decides, so describe what happened plainly and let them tell you.

Notes to keep

Talking to the adjuster

Describe the cause first, then the damage, then the smell. For example: hail cracked the rear glass on May 12; rain entered over the next two days; the cargo carpet and padding were soaked and now smell musty. That order helps the adjuster connect the odor to the covered event instead of seeing it as general wear.

Ask whether they want to see the car before cleaning, whether they have preferred glass or detail shops, and how to submit receipts. Write down the claim number and the adjuster's name, and keep every receipt until the claim is closed.

Common questions

Will a claim for odor cleanup raise my rates?

That depends on your insurer and the type of claim. Ask your agent before filing if you are unsure.

What if the smell appears weeks after the event?

Report it as soon as you notice it and explain the connection. Delayed odor from hidden water damage is common.
