Why spoiled food is so hard to clear
- Heat
- A closed car in direct Colorado sun gets much hotter than the outdoor air, which speeds spoilage dramatically.
- Worst offenders
- Raw chicken, fish and shellfish, ground meat, milk, eggs and fruit juices
- Where it soaks in
- Trunk carpet, cargo pad, spare tire well and the foam under cargo floor panels
- Food safety
- Perishables left in a hot car for hours should be thrown out, not refrigerated and used.
What to do and when
- As soon as you find it
- Wear gloves. Double-bag the food and any soaked packaging and take it straight to an outdoor trash can.
- Same day
- Open the trunk and all doors to air the car. Remove cargo mats, the floor panel and the spare tire cover if they are wet.
- Same day
- Blot and extract any liquid from the carpet and pad. Meat juice and fish drip spread farther than they look.
- Within a day or two
- Clean affected areas with an enzyme cleaner, let it dwell as directed, extract and rinse. Dry fully with fans or in a garage.
- Over the next week
- Check the area on a hot afternoon. If the smell returns, residue remains in the pad or under a panel.
Checking the places people miss
Spare tire well
Liquid from a leaking bag often runs to the lowest point in the trunk. Lift the floor and look, and remove the spare if needed.
Side pockets and cargo bins
Many SUVs have storage cubbies in the side trim. A tipped container can drain into them.
Under the rear seats
In hatchbacks and SUVs with the seats folded, spills slide toward the seat hinges and under the cushions.
Trim panel edges
Where carpet meets plastic trim, liquid can wick under the panel. A strong smell along an edge usually means it did.
Preventing the next one
Big grocery runs to the warehouse stores along the I-225 corridor and east toward E-470 often end with errands stacked on top of each other. A small insulated bag or a cooler in the trunk buys time on hot days, and a washable cargo liner with a raised edge keeps leaks from reaching the carpet. Putting meat and fish in a separate plastic bag at checkout adds one more barrier.
If the odor persists after careful cleaning, the source is almost always residue in the pad or under a panel that the cleaning did not reach. That is the point where removing trim or carpet sections, or having a professional do so, is more effective than repeated surface cleaning and fragrance.
