Clearing a sweat smell from the cabin
Start with the gear, because cleaning the car while the source keeps riding along will not hold.
Change how gear travels
Move sweaty clothes and pads into a washable, ventilated bag or a lidded plastic tub so they stop touching the cargo carpet and seatbacks directly.
Air the gear out at home
Hang hockey, football or lacrosse pads to dry fully after each use instead of leaving them zipped in a bag in the trunk overnight.
Vacuum and inspect the cargo area
Lift the cargo floor panel and look for damp spots, mud or a forgotten sock in the spare tire well.
Clean the fabric surfaces
Use an enzyme or bacteria-targeting upholstery cleaner on the cargo carpet and any seats where sweaty passengers sit, then extract and dry.
Wipe the contact points
Steering wheel, seat belts, door pulls and the gear shifter collect sweat and skin oils. A mild interior cleaner on a microfiber towel handles them.
Why this smell is so stubborn
Fresh sweat is mostly water and salt with very little odor. The familiar locker-room smell develops when skin bacteria feed on the sweat and oils trapped in fabric, especially synthetic fabrics and thick foam padding. A gear bag in a warm trunk keeps everything damp for hours, which is exactly the condition those bacteria need. Over a sports season, some of that moisture and bacteria transfers into the cargo carpet and the backs of rear seats.
Aurora families who drive to rinks, fields and gyms across the metro several times a week often notice the smell first in late fall, when the windows stay up and the heater runs. Seat belts are an overlooked source: the webbing touches sweaty shoulders on every drive home and is rarely cleaned.
