Checks the buyer used

The decision

Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.

Illustrative example, not a real car, owner or business. The SUV is priced well below similar vehicles. The buyer suspects the smoke is why.

  1. The buyer gets a quote from a detailer for full smoke cleanup including headliner, seats, glass, filter and evaporator treatment.
  2. They factor the cost and a few days without the car into an offer.
  3. The seller accepts a lower price.
  4. After cleanup, the buyer does a closed-car recheck on a hot day and asks for a second pass on the headliner.

The SUV ended up smelling neutral, and the total cost still came in under the price of a comparable non-smoker vehicle.

Lessons from the example

The vent test and cabin filter told the buyer the smoke had reached the HVAC system, which affects cost. A burn mark cannot be cleaned out, so the buyer accepted it as cosmetic. Asking for a closed-car recheck on a hot day caught the remaining headliner smell before it became a long-term annoyance.

Checking the AC on a test drive

The vent test was the most telling check. With windows up, the buyer turned the fan to high on fresh air, then on recirculate, then turned on the AC. Each setting brought a fresh burst of smoke smell, showing residue in the evaporator and ducts, not just on the seats. That is the part of a smoke cleanup most often skipped, and the one that makes a smell come back.

Common questions

Is it worth buying a smoker's car?

It can be, if the price reflects the cleanup and there are no burns or damage you cannot live with.

Did the buyer negotiate using the quote?

Yes. Showing the seller a written cleanup quote made the lower offer concrete rather than arbitrary.

Was the burn mark repaired?

The buyer left it; an upholstery shop could patch it if it bothered them later.
