Quick habits for busy-area drivers
If your car starts to smell
Find the hottest spot
After the car has sat in the sun, smell the dash, seats and cargo area; odors are strongest where heat concentrates.
Check under seats and in tracks
Dropped food and spilled drinks are the usual cause.
Check the vents
A musty burst when the fan starts points to the filter or AC.
Clean and dry
Clean the source, dry the area with doors open, then recheck.
Parking and heat
Cars parked for hours in open lots at the shopping center or the light rail stations along I-225 can get very hot inside. Heat speeds up how quickly spilled milk, coffee or food goes sour and makes smoke or vape residue release more odor. A car that smelled fine in the morning may smell noticeably different after a day in the sun.
Covered parking and sunshades help, but removing the source is what fixes it.
Commuting on I-225
Daily stop-and-go traffic on I-225 means exhaust and brake dust enter through the vents whenever the system is on fresh air. Over months, that loads the cabin filter and can leave a stale, sooty smell. Replacing the filter more often than the schedule suggests, and using recirculate in heavy traffic, keeps the cabin cleaner. Switch back to fresh air on open roads so moisture does not build up inside.
Common questions
Do window tints reduce odor?
Tint and sunshades lower cabin temperature, which slows odor release, but they do not remove a source.
Why does my car smell like brakes after traffic?
Fresh-air mode may be pulling in other cars' brake and exhaust smells. If it persists away from traffic, have your brakes checked.
