Trees, alleys and older garages
The neighborhoods along Del Mar Parkway are among Aurora's oldest, with mid-century homes, large elm and cottonwood trees, and alleys behind the houses. Many garages are small or used for storage, so cars park on the street or in driveways under the trees. Leaves, seeds and sap collect in the cowl below the windshield, and when they get wet they rot. The musty smell that follows comes through the vents every time the fan runs.
Clogged cowl drains also let rainwater run into the front footwells, soaking carpet and padding from below. A car that smells musty only after storms is often affected this way.
Clearing the cowl
Open the hood
The cowl is the plastic grille between the hood and the windshield.
Remove debris
Pull out leaves and seeds by hand or with a shop vacuum.
Find the drains
Drains are usually at each end of the cowl; clear them so water can flow out.
Replace the cabin filter
Debris often reaches the filter, which sits just behind the cowl or the glovebox.
Signs of a cowl problem
Older garages and storage
Small garages in older Aurora homes often hold lawn equipment, fuel cans and stored items alongside the car. Fuel and fertilizer smells can drift into a parked car with open windows or through the vents. Keeping those items sealed and away from where the car parks, and closing windows before pulling in, keeps garage smells out of the cabin. A sealed storage bin for fuel cans and lawn chemicals, kept at the far end of the garage, solves most garage-related car smells. Opening the garage door for a few minutes before starting the car also helps clear fumes.
Common questions
Can a car cover help?
A breathable cover keeps leaves out of the cowl but must be dry before going on, or it traps moisture.
Why does my car smell like gasoline in the garage?
Check for stored fuel cans or equipment first. If the smell is from the car itself, have it inspected for a fuel leak.
How often should I clear the cowl?
At least each fall after leaves drop, and after windy storms.
