Why cleaning cannot fix these
These smells come from fluids or parts outside the cabin, not from residue inside it. Air fresheners can hide a fuel or exhaust smell, which is dangerous. If a smell appears suddenly, changes when the engine warms up or comes with a warning light, treat it as mechanical until a mechanic says otherwise.
Keep a working carbon monoxide awareness: headaches, dizziness or drowsiness while driving with an exhaust smell mean get out and get fresh air. A mechanic can often find the source quickly with the engine warm, so describe exactly when the smell appears. Catching a small leak early is far cheaper than repairing the damage it causes over months. If several smells appear together, mention all of them to the mechanic, since they can point to one underlying problem.
Before calling the shop
Common questions
Is a musty smell ever mechanical?
Musty smells usually come from moisture in the cabin or AC. A sweet smell with foggy windows is the one to check promptly.
What should I tell the mechanic?
Describe the smell, when it happens, whether a warning light came on, and any fogging, leaks or performance changes.
Can I drive to the shop with a coolant smell?
Usually, if the temperature gauge is normal and coolant is not pouring out. If the engine overheats, stop and arrange a tow.
